Mark Brivik, one of Southwest Florida’s most notorious property flippers, was arrested Monday on 23 felony counts related to a scheme that allegedly defrauded investors out of more than $4.1 million.
It marked the first high-profile real estate fraud arrest since Neil Mohammad Husani and three of his associates were indicted by a federal grand jury in 2008 for an $83 million mortgage fraud scheme.
Brivik, 55, was charged with convincing seven investors that an "option to purchase" was available on a parcel of land in Manatee County when no option existed. He was charged with nine first-degree felony counts and 14 third-degree felony counts by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Also charged was Brivik’s wife, Marie, 53, who faces two first-degree felony counts and two third-degree felony counts.
The two were being held in the Sarasota County jail Monday night in lieu of paying $575,000 and $100,000 in bail, respectively.
