Kohl’s to Start Site Development Work for New Palm Coast Store Monday, April 14th
Good news for those who have worried that the Kohl’s project may not get off the ground. The Super Wal-Mart is still on track too.
April 13, 2008 – Palm Coast, FL – Any time a major project moves forward, there are things that can get in the way. Changes in the economy can trigger a change in direction for retailers. Linens n’ Things once planned a new store in Town Center near the SuperTarget. They backed out and are now facing possible Chapter 11 bankruptcy as early as next week. Fortunately for Palm Coast, Books a Million stepped in to take their place. There are so many permitting hurdles to jump; city or county zoning, St. Johns Water Management, Army Corps of Engineers, etc. Kohl’s has cleared these hurdles. The developer of the new Kohl’s department store complex will begin site clearing tomorrow.
Kohl’s will be located on the west side of Belle Terre across from Albertson’s. The site will include the property presently occupied by one of Palm Coast’s oldest fire stations. As part of their development agreement with the city, the developer agreed to build a new fire station on the west side of the parcel fronting Corporate Drive. The old station cannot be demolished until the new station is completed. So don’t expect to do this year’s Christmas shopping at a Palm Coast Kohl’s.
Wal-Mart reportedly reconsidered their new store construction schedule in light of the present downturn in the U.S. economy, but the Palm Coast site on Old King’s road made the cut. Site preparation will likely begin with the commencement of the project to expand Old Kings to four lanes later this year.
